It is a photo of the HXN5 locomotive, which is essentially an ES60AC with some changes to the cab, trucks, frames.

I would love to have seen this version of locomotive be the new Amtrak power. However Amtrak never had much luck with six axle engines, which I would venture is part of the reason they did not accept this proposal? SDP40F, P30CH, E60 all comes to mind.

With the sale of GE Transportation to Wabtec and the overall mess the GE parent company being in, I suspect EMD probably have gained some market share in the last year especially being part of Cat

Hope this does not mean the railroads will be springing up catenary all over the place in the future. Eletrified railroad certainly destroy the view and ambiance.

Given that there was an article in Bloomberg a couple of years ago stating that Australian iron ore locomotive engineers make more money that surgeons, it does not surprise me that automation is being pushed to save cost

Would GEVO engine be ideal in a passenger locomotive?

Seeing more of the the Amtrak Charger engines arriving, I am wondering aloud if GE had competed more aggressively in the passenger market, would the GEVO 12 cylinder engine be a good prime mover in the new passenger locomotives? Why did the Charger locomotives use a unproven Cummins diesel rather th...

What will happen to P40/P42 locomotives?

Since Amtrak has officially placed new order to buy 75 Siemens Chargers for long distance passenger operations, what will happen to the P40/P42 Genesis locomotives? The previous F40s were converted to bag coaches, I doubt the Genesis engines will go through the same route. I personally will miss the...

interesting that GE units built for broader gauge (India, Ukraine) are all smaller in dimension vs the domestic units. I thought the former Soviet republics all had pretty large loading gauges.

I feel this news is as good as it will be for GETS and its employees and probably the railroads. GE is not selling all of GETS outright, and a rail focused company is purchasing the other half instead of some shark infested fund in the case of EMD sale. It is likely the new company will keep focused...

The latest news/rumor is GE plan to spin off GE Transportation instead of doing a sale. Anyone see the pro and cons of doing spin off vs a sale for GETS?

I read that the ALCO Hi-AD trucks did rode very well in Australia with long welded rails and well maintained road bed. In the US, especially on IC, where the tracks were jointed and poorly maintained, the Hi-AD has a tendency to bounce and shake. Steve Lee wrote a piece in Trains magazine about his ...

I am surprised to hear SD70ACe being disposed of on CSX, although it seems like SD70ACe has always had a particular bad reputation on CSX vs the other railroads.

Thanks Dave for such outstanding insight, couldn't find such information anywhere else. Do you know if the GE AC traction motors improved/altered between the AC4400CW models and the ES44AC/ET44AC models? Also, if the minimum/maximum wheel diameter difference seems to be 4 inches, does that imply the...
