octr202 Wouldn't the best bet (long term) be to switch to a four-door car design? Or are there reasons (other than maximizing seating versus standing capacity) why WMATA doesn't want to go this route? Given how massive Metro cars are (compared to many other RT systems) I'm still surprised they stuc...

There are some interesting new details about some firsts that we will see on the 8000 series cars from Hitachi. That's actually not a bad evolution of the front end in the rendering. One thing I think will probably occur is that Hitachi will likely use their own propulsion. My guess is it will be similar to the new Miami Metro trains that they built a few years ago (propulsion developed by AnsaldoBreda but no...

Based on the list in the WMATA press release this contract will replace all of the remaining Westinghouse modular escalators and escalators by other manufactures when these stations were originally built. If they go with all of the options, it could allow the 6000 series to be fully retired. But, the 6000 series cars have done well overall with reliability, being the most reliable fleet besides the 7k. Realistically, the 6k could go for an overhaul and last another 20 years.

It looks like Hitachi Rail (the former Breda) will be building the 8000 series.

All of the 1k, 4k, and 5k cars have been scraped with the exception of 1000 and 1001 (non revenue preservation). A minor point of clarification: 4000-4001 and 5000-5001 were all retained as "heritage fleet" along with 1000-1001. The 5k cars were basket cases from the beginning and remaine...

Unfortunately Cuomo thinks he's the savior of everything in the system when Byford actually has the experience and is well respected. Even worse was Cuomo's comments "He did the job for two years. You know, nobody does these jobs for a lifetime." came across as egotistical in a way. Here's...

CRRC is officially out of the running for bidding on anything for the Washington Metro. Under a compromise agreement, CRRC can remain in the US and bid on projects with their existing clients as they are grandfathered in the legislation. Also, CRRC can bid on any project not federally funded. For fe...

Baltimore's new cars are also being built by Hitachi in Medley, FL as well. They're going to be virtually identical to what Miami ordered except for a different exterior cab bonnet and some minor differences on the interior.
