Re: Surviving Maine Central Passenger Equipment

Almost a year ago, while sitting in my bunk one night in the barracks at Bagram Airfield I was doing online research in some of the photo archives when I noticed an uncanny match between two photos taken decades apart. When I realized the potential significance I was surprised to say the least. In ...

What is the New Hampshire Northcoast schedule? This question seems to come up a lot. The closest thing to a schedule I believe are south bound trains to Dover during the afternoons, Monday - Thursday. Pan Am crews take the train to Boston at night and return to Dover in the early mornings before th...

Did the two ever leave BET while on lease to MBCR? I don't remember seeing any pictures of them except sitting outside the shop.

I don't see it making any sense to repower them. You've got a 7FDL in them, the same engine core as the rest of the Genesis units - so you've got mostly drop-in replacement parts for a very small fleet (18 locomotives.) Easy repair, capable of switching or road service. . .I agree that they seem lik...

Well, there's some interesting combinations out there. The FL9s were 2 axles in the front, and three in the back. B-B A-1-A. The GMD-1s were also A-1-A - A-1-A - but the middle idler axle was about 6" smaller in diameter so the traction motors could still fit on the truck under the frame! I thi...

Parking at the garage in Haverhill is only $4 (Up to 18hours, $8 for 24/hours), and its right across the street, connected to the station via pedestrian bridge. (Since you can't get there via train.) I've been tempted to go for the ride, since I still haven't been to Brunswick.

I've gotta agree with some of the population numbers. The ridership just isn't there. Not everyone commutes to Boston! You have lots of people who need to get to other places to work, and right now, most of the rail transit around Boston is all going in and out of the city - there's very little that...

It's a bit of a controversial issue as you can see. I think your best bet is Back Bay-Orange Line-North Station. I'll second that. No transfers on the subway, and its a one-seat ride. It shouldn't take too long, there's plenty of announcements for North Station. Going back, I'd suggest South Statio...

Re: Pre-Amtrak boarding procedures: lines, ticket checks, et

A large part of the problem IS that we, collectively, have forgotten how to board trains in an orderly fashion. As a friend would say, the passengers aren't stupid - just uninformed . Back in the heyday, people knew how to board trains, because boarding trains was something they did frequently - lik...

I've been reading about the HHP8s here, and on the Amtrak forum. I can understand why, at least for now, they're looking at going all-diesel. They had 4 AEM7s, and 6 HHP8s - all locomotives that worked pretty much because someone else ordered them in bulk (AMTRAK). Once AMTRAK stops running the HHP8...

Stmtrolleyguy: Walking? Try that in the winter or with luggage or both. Subway? We have that now and the crowds at Park, DC, etc, are pretty bad. Taxi? Non-starter. That's exactly my point! There IS no easy way to do it. You're either doing it the neanderthal way (on foot), the sardine way (Ala MBT...

There is one other thing to consider about connecting the two stations in Boston - who's it really supposed to benefit? I think a lot of us are looking at it from a local perspective. It's not just about connecting the stations - its about the big picture allowing run-through trains. Right now, all ...

I never really saw it as a security measure in Boston either. You've got a lot of passengers wandering around, and it makes sense to do a pre-boarding check to make sure everyone has tickets for the right train. It doesn't help that many people just know they're taking the train - not weather its an...

Just my thoughts on this : There's two separate problems here. The first is getting trains between North and South station. The second is getting people between North and South stations. There are many ways to get people form one station to the other. 1. Walking! The two stations are not very far ap...
