Thanks for the clarification. I talked with people who lived near the NL site when it was active and they talked about seeing D&H (and other) cars there all the time. I put 2+2 together and came up with 3. Sorry about that. As to the site, it is still vacant but the reported "significant he...

Went past Kenwood again today and 7305 is there in CP colors and lettering. Didn't know about 7312 still being in heritage colors, thanks Scott. I was under the impression that the unit up in North Creek is not an ex-D&H unit but an RS-11 painted up to look like a D&H unit. Don't ask me wher...

Why would CP repaint one of their heritage units? You have to ask them that not me but they seem to do it all the time. Other than 7303 and 7304 does anybody know of any other former D&H units still in stripes? If I was to hazard a guess it would be because of the cost of repainting the unit in...

is back at Kenwood Yard. I sighted her this morning. Based on the rattiness of the paint job I don't know how much longer she'll be in lighting stripes so if you're going to be in the area, bring your camera.

I have never gotten a clear anwer as to where the ore went after it reached Saratoga. It does not seem to have continued as a unit train. Does anyone know? If I remember correctly most of the material went to the old National Industry site in Albany (just off Rte 5/Central Ave) and the by-products f...

Sorry I missed this posting when it first came out or I would have broken out the books and supplied what I could have.

My real question is how did you manage to do it over the internet?

Thanks

It was 7304 not 7303 and she was there yesterday both in the morning and at night. Last night she was hooked up to the transfer caboose.

Saw 7303 behind a couple of red barns on Sunday morning about 10:30 am. I'm going past the place tomorrow I'll let you know if I see her.

Get to the local library and see if they have access to the Sanborn maps either in book form or on-line. I have two giant Sanborn books that cover the city of Albany and the wealth of railroad related information in them is incredible. The only issue with the books is what you see may not be correct...

Scot: No idea of where she goes to but I go past the yard at least once a week. Sometimes 04 is there, sometimes 03 sometimes neither. And I can go for weeks at a time without seeing a lightening stripe in the yard (repaints seem to be there quite often too). Where they go in the mean time I don't k...

This type of thing happened a lot during the Savings and Loan Crisis of the 1980s. The major assets are sold off (in this case the railroad) and residual corporations are created to liquidate or manage any remaining assets. Sometimes they can linger on for years. KeyBank had one that handled real es...

With the Liquidation of the O&W, they could have purchased the assets of the O&W without the debt. Scranton-Cornwall/Weehauken and several other branches would have probably been what the D&H would have taken. That and locomotives. An FT in Lightning stripes would have been pretty sweet...

Pretty much the tank cars are moved around as needed. I go past Kenwood a number of times during the week and actually now live along the CSX line out of Kenwood south. There is no set schedule as i have caught the train blocking the road into Cargill moving cars at all hours of the day or night. I ...

The O&W went bankrupt for a reason it was a lousy idea. Acquisition of the O&W wouldn't have given the D&H anything of value. It didn't reach different markets that couldn't be reached more easily and cheaply by interchange with other railroads. The route was a tough mountain one, especi...

Sorry guys had a brain cramp.

I remembered when the numbers were painted on the side in big bold numbers. Now they just paint them in skinny little yellow numbers you can't see from a distance.

It's 7303 doing the work.
