The Western Refrigerator Line Company (WRX) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Refrigerator_Line I would hazard a guess, looking at the car count shown at the bottom of the page, that all the cars were built around the time the company was formed in 1929. The continuous decreasing numbers seem to...

Just for added help for people trying to visualize the location: https://goo.gl/maps/8sU6eyyzVgcyY6J56 North is to the left in the picture, and I've oriented to GMap the same way. The firehouse they're talking about to the left of the bridge is the Allen St Firehouse. 1969 Aerial of the area: https:...

So, what I'm reading is that it was basically "subsidized" until Amtrak actually got its feet under it and could hire its own crews/purchase its own equipment?

Never underestimate the... incompetence... of politicians.

Also, it could be said that in a sense, it wasn't entirely fruitless. I mean, here we are discussing the lack of food options. *shrug*

I think he's saying after Gunn took the NYS-owned rebuilt Turbos into hiding, Boardman's retaliation was that NYS stopped paying Amtrak for in-house food service and contracted with Subway instead. Long story short, the lack of in-house food service is the result of a tit-for-tat battle between Amtr...

We've always joke at work, if a book was ever written. No one would believe the stories.. Don't work with railroads, but we have the same joke where I work - We could write it, but they'd file it under fiction in the library. Or make a reality TV series out of it, but people wouldn't believe it was...

The digital signal is nothing more than modulated audio on a carrier signal. Basically a modem. If the receiver specifically knows that it should only be decoding the data, then you'd hear nothing if it can't decode the signal. If the receiver thinks it's supposed to receiving an analog audio signal...

This signal is way too strong for Toronto. This is on a 'digital' receiver Uniden BCD996P2, but I don't have the NXDX option installed, just the more common P25. The signal is in the airwaves, so if it's on the frequency, your scanner will "hear" it. Having the "option installed"...

Why couldn't these equipment deliveries been routed Eastward over the ERIE to Binghamton, thence DL&W over Tunkhannock to Scranton then ??? to Philly as were the V-II's? <snip> OR ERIE to "Bingo", D&H, to Albany, and thence NYC to PRR "somewhere in New York"? Biggest fac...

It went by Fairport according to the shot from the Fairport VRF camera. I'm assuming it was on the West Shore at the time at Fairport. If that is correct what connection between the old EL Southern Tier and the WS is there left? Unless someone else has a better handle of it. It was not on the West ...

I'm also curious, I can't quite make out the station sign at the 5:05 mark. Looks like it starts with an A. Did A&A have their own depot in Attica? I was previously under the impression that they shared the depot there with Erie.

Ok more question: In regards to the parallel Erie- when it would have gone all the way to Batavia -would that have been active as same time as this NYC line ? As the DL&W is built over those two lines just got to thinking both might have been active north of that point. As I understand it, the ...

This popped up in my recommended list tonight: https://youtu.be/hp0tKa92h1c Footage from a trip by the 'Railroad Enthusiasts' in August 1938. Unfortunately true to the video's title, about half of the video is spent on the PRR's navigation of the interlocking at Tower 49 and trip down the Buffalo Li...

There is, however, a simple safety feature: make the seats face backwards. <snip> but many passengers don't like them. I wouldn't necessarily call it a case of "not liking them" without expanding on it --- Many people have balance and/or motion issues with traveling backwards for long per...

CSX has done almost everything under the sun to prevent Amtrak picking up higher speeds along the WLR corridor west of Albany. "Upgrade the track? Nah, it's good for our 60mph max intermodals. Live with it." Build out a third track for Amtrak's exclusive use? I think CSX half-heartedly &qu...
