The current operations of B&H are variable. If you come in "the spring" they may have changed. At the moment, B&H gets an NS interchange at Painted Post M-W-F. The Coopers Plains based B&H crew normally goes to switch the gas storage facility east of Bath on a daily basis (This...

WNYP operated a plow extra over Keating Summit today (Feb. 4.) It is the first operation of a Russell Plow in several years. Drifts on the Olean-Emporium line were too high to be handled with a ballast regulator. It is still snowing tonight and a second plow extra is scheduled to operate to Hornell ...

Both grain elevators are active LAL customers. The elevator on the former Livonia line south of Conesus Lake Jct. is operated by PACMA (a Perdue Farms affiliate). The elevator north of Avon is owned by Howlett Farms, Inc. The LAL originates several hundred carloads of grain and soybeans each year.

The wooden coach you saw at Hammondsport, along with a wooden combine from the same era, were regularly seen on B&H passenger specials in the 1960's. They were originally brought to Steuben County by B&H General Manager Tony Hannold who owned them personally. In 1975, Hannold left Hammondspo...

It's more efficient for both parties. BPRR runs a daily train in each direction between Buffalo to East Salamanca Yard. Interchange with WNYP at East Salamanca eliminates the need for a stop for set offs and pick ups at Machias - saving time and money.

The Genesee River bridge in Henrietta is jointly owned by CSX and LAL. The Genesee Junction yard itself is owned by CSX - but R&S and LAL have the right to operate through it for the purposes of interchange. You are correct that the Surface Transportation Board struck down a previous contractual...

No part of the WNYP is being embargoed. No part of the railroad is up for abandonment. WNYP will continue to serve all its customers. The rumors outlined above apparently relate to a plan that is being implemented that will reroute some WNYP traffic to achieve operating efficiencies and a significan...

Penn Central's Catskill Mountain Branch was not included in the Final System Plan when the northeastern railroad system was restructured under the Regional Rail Revitalization and Regulatory Act of 1976 (4R Act). As a result, the branch between Kingston and Stamford lost common carrier status that y...

Another line that is technically in service, but hardly ever used, is the Metro North line from Beacon to Danbury, Connecticut.

Several longtime out-of service (but not formally abandoned) branch lines in New York come to mind: Waterboro Jct. to Conewango and Dayton-Cattaraugus -- New York & Lake Erie RR Chenango Forks - Norwich-Sherburne -- New York Susquehanna & Western RR Carthage-Newton Falls -- Mohawk, Adirondac...

Well, I did get one thing a little backward in my earlier post. Sperry Rail Service actually acquired Harsco Track Technologies - not the other way around as I indicated. I was going from memory, sometimes a bad thing at my age.

The company has been in business for many years and is a worldwide operation. Sperry use...

Apologies, Otto. I thought you were talking about the railroad. RIT is still a fine institution.
