I don't know if they were ever under serious consideration for purchase, but those units had serious mechanical problems and broke down while under demonstration testing. Of course, that was back in the day before overbearing government regulation banned any vehicle or type of operation that didn't ...

Maybe that should have been taken into account before blanket implementation. Maybe some politicians need a bug in their ear about this rather than just throwing dollars at a problem that seems to have no good solution. Granted every carrier has unique operating circumstances, however once upon a ti...

Dumb question: Why don't they all have the same type of equipment? Are the standards really that different or is this just somebody's way of making an extra buck thanks to the law?

No. Any major renovations to a station require high level platforms, and if you read the Capital Budget you'll see that there is a major push to make all of the busy stations on the SEPTA-owned trunk high level. In the interim, the mini high level platforms comply. The Feds realize there's differen...

I'm told following the trip, riders will also be treated to a tour of NHIR's shops.

Interesting point. Some of SEPTA's projects are spending more money per square foot than what was spent per square foot on the new Comcast Center. WJ falls into that category, as does some of SEPTA's famous bus loops.

I'm from the Philadelphia area and am referring to SEPTA, which is a rollup of the former Philadelphia Transit Corporation, the Reading/Penn Central, Red Arrow bus and trolley, and the Frontier/suburban bus lines. SEPTA has axed many rail routes and trucated miles over the years, and there's no hope...

I'm looking for information and discussion on the existence of Metra as an independent operating and funded agency and how it relates to its ability to fund service and capital projects verses other transit operators across the country where commuter rail is owned and operated by a single agency, sa...

What the [dickens] are you talking about?

Yes Matthew I saw the smoke and mirrors show. Apparently you haven't caught on to the disconnect between the press conferences and the capital budget.

Too bad all of the region's energies and money was wasted on going after discretionary grants for station improvements instead of bridges and substations.

I think its important to note that it appears that many municipalities and the city are now in the habit of using SEPTA as their public works department. Jenkintown and Abington have flooding issues caused by overbuilding, so SEPTA is called in to mitigate the issue by replacing culverts with bridge...

Weren't these HLP projects being done in part for ADA accessibility? I thought it was odd that they put wheelchair ramps in at Malvern but no mini-highs or HLPs.

So the net result is more equipment needed to service the existing ridership. That leaves no room for growth. How will longer consists work with existing platform constraints? Are the new cars conducive to riders walking between cars in cases where some cars do not meet the platform?
