I suspect we're wandering off topic, but just to clarify, I travel on a UK passport. Until Brexit I could visit any EU country without having to queue for entry/exit stamps. Since Brexit, UK citizens have to queue and get stamps when they enter the Schengen zone or any other EU state. Even when you ...

I agree 100% there's no need for entry and exit stamps. But unfortunately, many countries in the world, including the EU, still insist on them, so the delays will continue. When UK was in the EU, there were no stamps for UK or any other EU citizens, so things went faster and more smoothly.

Well, I think the point is that the Orient Express appears to believe it will be a problem. While it's true that UK was never in the Schengen zone, before Brexit I was able to pass through immigration quickly in the queue for EU citizens, and didn't have to get entry and exit stamps. Now I have to q...

Orient Express to axe UK section after 41 years due to Brexit Luxury train operator cuts service ahead of biometric passport checks so passengers will have to join train in Paris... And I should have added ensuring there is plenty of water in the boiler, as a general safety measure not connected with whether the loco will move or not.

We were taught that no locomotive should ever be left unattended without the reversing lever in its centre position, as well as throttle and all steam cocks closed (but there is the possibility of leaks here), handbrake on, and if being left for any length of time, wheel chocks in place.

Rovos Rail is indeed an impressive operation. I was privileged to do part of my training as a main line steam locomotive fireman on Rovos Rail twenty years ago, when they still used steam locos for parts of the journey. I belonged to a volunteer heritage preservation group, Friends of the Rail, whic...
