Re: Commuter Rail Delay Discussion

Nice. Our train (3961) just went from Express to super local...and apparently it was the brain trust at Amtrak dispatching who decided this AFTER we’d already departed Newark. Nothing like a crowded train making 8 extra stops with hardly anyone boarding or getting off.

Fines are rather effective in enforcement actions against private enterprises. Fines against government agencies are rather ineffective since states and state agencies pay fines using someone else's money. As someone who works for a European investment bank with a large US presence having had many ...

Re: Why are NJ Transit trains so slow?

I'll field this one. You were following a Coast Line down three while the Amtrak operated down four. You were held at Iselin, to follow the Amtrak down four. Why? Because unbeknownst to you, one of the reasons the schedule is slow is because there is a major, long term track outage between NBK-TRE....

Well, I ride between Jersey Ave and NYP on a daily basis and it definitely seems Amtrak has a good part in how slow we run many times. Tonight's commute takes the cake: I'm in the 6:12p Exp which departs 30+ minutes after its departure time. Then we creep along after stopping at Sec Jct. Conductor i...

Indeed. I think I'm riding on that consist now as I type this post.

Hopefully I didn't miss any earlier mention of this but is there any performance advantage with installing these new pans on the arrows?

There was a piece on the local evening CBS News a couple of weeks ago about residents in New York (Queens I think) being upset about the extent of Amtrak's tree clearing. Regarding Merril Park in Iselin/Colonia, I hope you don't mean they're moving the fence further back and claiming part of the pa...

Re: Is Metro North's M2 better built than the Arrow III??

Just as a sidenote: I really enjoyed riding in the railfan seat during my return trip from Stamford. That is a REALLY neat M2 feature!! (AIII operators so rarely have that "blast shield" lowered for rail fan view.) I'd totally forgotten that there was a lower level at GCT, to which our inb...

Is Metro North's M2 better built than the Arrow III??

I know that's a loaded and subjective question. However, yesterday was my first time ever riding on Metro North AND on an M2 so, bear with me. When I boarded for my trip to Stamford (from GCT), I plopped in my seat, looked around and noted that this train was not exactly Comet V new. :P Anyway, I ne...

Re: 3 Metropark expresses in 12 minutes?

Before the last schedule change, I would ride 3702 out of Jrsy Ave and (depending on how badly we were held up before merging on to track 4) switch for the express (3812) at New Brunswick. I was always amazed at how quickly the platform would populate in the short span of time between both trains. F...

That gigundo parking deck sitting atop the parking lot @ Metropark s/b enough to answer the OP's question.

while I doubt it was because of the engineer po'ed the dispatcher, sometimes that is an issue! If a dispatcher knows that a crew isn't going to "dilly dally" around and will get the train moving, he will pull up the railroad for that train and give them "a good move" if they giv...

Last night, I boarded 3979 @ Nwk Penn (6:54p Trenton Exp) for my trip to Jersey Avenue. It arrived only about 1minute or so late on track 3 but about 3 minutes after 3731 (6:56p Jersey Ave local)'s early arrival on track 4. 3731 leaves a bit ahead of us but we later pass it just west of Nwk Airport ...

While riding on a delayed NJT 3165 yesterday afternoon (loco problem-- ALP46 -- @ Metropark), we pulled into Edison where I noticed a very crowded eastbound platform. A few seconds after our arrival, and eastbound Keystone pulls in and proceeds to collect passengers. Having grown up in Edison, I've ...
