Re: In Praise of 'N'!

I'm all for N! I started in HO back in the early '70s and thought that I'd stay with HO forever. My cousins had gotten into N scale about the same time that I was starting in HO. I was impressed with the small size of N but the detail and the poor operation of N scale locomotives left a lot to be de...

Excellent presentation! I've seen many of the photos but I've never seen the street crossing photos from the Haskell section and some of the photos from the Ringwood area. Having lived in Wanaque from 1973 to 2011 I've seen a lot of changes and have become very interested in the town's history. Than...

I was back in Sayre visiting family several times during the summer and early fall of 2017 and those cabooses are still there. The station is also still standing though I couldn't tell if it was in current use or not.

What year/s was all service cut back to Wanaque? When were last trains of any kind on up to Ringwood and/or to Hewitt? In 1963 or 1964, Ken Coombs, who was working as the vacation relief agent in Wanaque-Midvale, phoned me to say that the two diesels kept at Peters Mine just arrived at his station,...

I noticed there is a new two-target home signal (covered; not yet active) on Track 2 at Wharton facing west. Both westbound signals (on Tracks 1 & 2) also have new side protruding signal heads between the two targets (covered; not yet active) capable of displaying Rule 280a: Clear to the Next I...

DC has been the foundation of this hobby since its inception....it isn't going away, and that's okay. I do believe that DCC will also be around for a long time to come, and that's okay too. Initially DCC was not going to be an option for me but as time went by and the decoders got easier to install ...

Status of the Atlas Signal System

It's been a while since I've posted here, also a while since I've been active in model railroading. Things are starting to change and I'll be able to start working on my N-scale layout again. One of the things I had wanted to add was the Atlas signal system. It came out right about the time that I w...

If you're willing to work in N-scale it can be done very easily. I have an N-scale layout built on a hollow-core door. The track plan is a slightly modified Atlas plan. The mainline is a dogbone (an oval pinched in the middle) with a passing siding on one end, a yard lead on the other end, and sever...

Island Dragway.....it's been years since I've heard that name. My friend and I used to run a car in the NHRA Modified-Stock class back in the early 1980's. Island Dragway was a great place to race. I wasn't quite as railroad-aware back then as I am now and didn't know that the track was built on par...

What a great find! Thanks for posting the link. The link is for Part 2, if you look to the right side of your screen you'll see Part 1, which covers Weehawken to Cornwall.

You'll never know what you'll find on the internet, especially YouTube!

Re: So WHY are you a rail fan?

A few reasons as to why I'm a railfan. First, and probably the most influential, is that I have lived in major railroad towns my whole life: I was born in 1964, in Sayre, PA, which was a major yard and shop town for the LV. The EL was a stone's throw away from Sayre, and the D&H also made freque...

I wouldn't worry too much about what Google says. Like Scot said, I think it just shows that people are smarter about using Google. Since there are other threads here that are debating the status of the hobby all I'll say here is that the hobby may not be what it was 20-30 years ago but there is no ...

I can't answer why some people consider being a railfan weird. I'm a model railroader and railfan and I don't hesitate to let people know about my hobbies. I do get the occassional 'look' from people, but I think that's also because when I'm in a conversation involving hobby interests I also tell th...

Nice work! I have a couple of these buses and I'll have to try dressing them up like you did. I'm actually thinking about repainting them in the current NJT bus scheme. I would just need to strip, or at least lessen, the intensity of the green paint on the roof since the NJT scheme requires a white ...

Re: What's the deal with train shows these days?

I agree, train shows aren't what they used to be. I remember several train shows I used to attend back in the 80's that were excellent. They were a mix of private vendors and local hobby shops and they covered all scales. I was always able to find great deals on everything from locomotives to scener...
