Yet again, if that were the case, if the state were to do that (it would be a huge undertaking) that would be an NJT service. It takes a lot of money to run a service like that, and quite frankly the CMSL would not be able to do it (IMO) they might have the equipment but would they have the manpower to do it day in and day out on a regular schedule?

We have been to Cape May five times in the past year and a half and have missed the train being operational on all occasions which is rather disappointing. I would make an effort to ride but starting late in the season and not operating on the holiday's makes it difficult to plan a vacation around the schedule.

With just a LITTLE of that 600 million surplus Tony could hire the personel and equipment to do this service. The River line is 1.65 to ride from Camden to Trenton,so with a little help like the River Line gets it is very possible. We would gladly pay more for the service. Just may to december,if they can do it for other lines, they can do it for us. This really gets old asking for service year after year, the same questions, the same results. Also there IS MONEY,they just dont want to spend it here. The ACES line caters to AC gamblers and there is so many casinos in other areas, that is why ridership is down(its a great train). We are talking about beach, boardwalk, and summer tourist crowd and local residents that want to go to Philadelphia(same as some want to go to New York).

As much as I would love to see NJT rebuild the entire line from Winslow to CM, I just cannot see it happening anytime soon. Also if NJ Dot were to put any significant amount of money towards restoring passenger service on the line, they would want NJT to operate it. NJT does not have (and to my knowledge has never had) any line that was purley seasonal.

Again as much as I would love to see NJT rebuild and operate this line, it just will not happen with the current situation in this state. ACES is almost completely funded by a group of casinos, and did not require any upgrades to track in order to operate.

They had the Pony Express that had a tiny spur that was used seasonal in Monmouth Park.

I visited Tuckahoe on my way back form the shore yesterday and M-407 and M-410 were conspicuously absent. ;). There was also a string of VERY freshly delivered trash container flats (shiny wheels) on the Cape May main just below the crossing, obviously more cars for storage which is also a positive sign for CMSL.

I am very encouraged that service will begin soon and will make every effort to ride again this year.

Good Luck to Tony and the rest of the CMSL crew.

Both operative RDCs have been moved south towards Cape May in anticipation of service in August. Additional mechanical work is being performed on the cars to keep them in excellent condition. The CMSL likes to make sure everything is running at 100% before equipment moves in revenue service, a demonstration of the love and respect the owner has for these 60+ year old Budds.

Glad to see service will start up soon. Don't forget with 60 year old cars, they have no choice but to make everything is 100% running so no break downs occur. That will only tick off the people riding it and risk losing a limited seasonal business.

Trainlawyer wrote:Please, Please, PLEASE - Do not go poking around uninvited in areas beyond the stations. If the two cars are where I believe they are, you have to go past a gate to get to them and that tends to upset both the property owner and his dog. Both sides of the track are private property. The property owner is a supporter of the railroad and it would not benefit anyone to upset this relationship by having his driveway become a a railfan "must see" location.

GME
GME is right here - just because the cars are in lower Cape May County is not an invitation to trespass. Please do not do so, unless you would like to pay a fine.

I strongly agree. Every indication is that we will be able to view the cars from plenty of safe, public locations in the near future. AND, don't forget to ride and support the railroad.

If cars have in fact moved south that is a positive indication. It would seem to indicate that the track repairs from the most recent theft of rail plates were made. As for those clamoring for full rail passenger service on the CMSL, I believe that NJT has indicated that there is No market for daily train service there. If there was, something would at least be planned. Let's just be thankful that we have the CMSL, for had it not existed we would be riding bicycles on that ROW right now. Hope that we see service resuming soon. I am sure that Tony wants to see it happen as much as we do.

I don't know that there is no need for regular service on the CMSL. Has anyone done a study or asked the general public if such a service would be useful?

Let's look at the proposed new line to connect Camden with Glassboro. The government wants to spend a ton of money to see if this would be feasible to run a train down there. How about this. Run one of the many RDCs already in the area, one of Toni's or the one sitting in Winslow Jct, and see how many peole use the service. Of course funds would be needed to run ads to let people know it was available. If after, say, 6 months there was no ridership, the only thing lost would be the money spent to lease the cars and personnel to run them.

So do the same thing on the CMSL. Run an RDC from Winslow Jct. to Cape May and see what happens.

Remember the RDC was developed to keep lines open that no longer required a full train. So let's use the same thought process in reverse. Run the RDCs and if required, then you buy new train sets for a full fledged line.

Later!
