Sure shelling, happens a lot on wheels of cars with diskbrakes.

I would say a VERY high percentage of the freight car wheels running around North America look like that.

I'll 2ed that looks like something off of a Hopper Car after a few trips from a Coal Mine to the power plant and back.

yep, though i do not see any defect on that wheel that would make us take the wheel out! the shells need to be 1 inch in diameter, or 2 1/2 inches long..

Only thing about Flat Spots in a wheel set is that it makes for job security for the track maintaince guys.
