"WHITEHALL -- South William Street was closed for part of Saturday morning after a freight train derailed and blocked the street, police said. No injuries or spills were reported. One engine was on its side, another was off the tracks and 11 freight cars were off the tracks as of 7:30 a.m., according to Whitehall Police. South William Street was reopened around 8 a.m. The Vermont Rail Co. freight train was headed west when it jumped the tracks between South William Street and the railroad trestle over Wood Creek, Whitehall Police Sgt. Richard LaChapelle said."

Them VRS Boys don't fool around. The line has reopened.
The cleanup was relatively easy, as all the cars derailed
were empties, the track damage was light and apparently
the bridge was not damaged.

not the first time.. several years ago one truck (or so) of a freight (if I remember) jumped the rail and ripped the hell out of the ties from somewhere west of(toward the old whitehall station) the n/s road that goes past the NG Bldg/rt4 all the way east, almost to the rt 4 crossing...Hellava mess...If I remember, I used to golf south on that road, I saw them working on it for over a week, lotsa kindling.... Best guess, say 2005... Ed
