I was in Altoona on August 15, 2009 and I saw this engine platform behind the Juniata shops. I was wondering if anyone could identify it. Could it be a new SD40E? Does anyone know what number this is or was? It is the beige engine without a hood.

That would be one of the RP-E4C slug rebuilds from a GP38.

Do you know what number it will be?

There is no way to know from those pictures.

Now looking at the build dates on the new RP-E4Cs, would this platform have been 707 or 708? If this was taken in August, could 707 have been fully completed for September? Or would this have been the 708 done in October?

For this unit to be 707 would it have been added a hood and painted in time for late September? When was "Spirit of Conrail" transformed into the 708? If anyone could give an educated guess to this units number, please do so.

When I was out there in June last year the "Spirit of Conrail"'s Long Hood was on a flat car being moved into the shop.
