high value time sensitive frieght is an ideal partner to a high speed train system . Either the freight railroads allow for both to develop , or the government should fund new railroads to do both . niether may be economic on its own , together they would be .

OK, what say we return to topic of "Amtrak and Politics"

A few "brief passages" from an article appearing in Today's New York Times:

"The Secret Service ordered the closings, saying they were necessary to block potential terrorist attacks at the (Democratic National) convention, the first to be held since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The rail hub, North Station, is in the same building as the FleetCenter, where the convention will be held, and the highway, Interstate 93, runs alongside......North Station will close from Friday, July 23, three days before the convention starts, until July 30. Commuter trains will stop outside Boston, and travelers will be bused into the city. The Orange and Green subway lines will not stop at North Station. I-93 will be closed only on the four evenings of the convention, from July 26 to 29".

Obviously Madrid is not being taken lightly, and if a policital convention is to be held in a major metropolitan area (even though one wonders why they continue to be held; the last time I recall anything of substance being decided at one was the 1952 Republican)., the actions are probably for the best.

Oh, and lest we forget where the Republicans are going to convene this year, and guess what facility their venue sits atop?

Lastly, for those who want "the whole enchilada":
