Here are some photos of the Waverly Sayre & Athens Traction Company car barn on Spring st. in Sayre:
Notice that the tracks leave the building, and immediately turn north and south on Spring street..
Today, the current Penelec building is set further back from spring street..
Assuming that the current Penelec building *is* the old car barn, there are a few things that could explain this:
a. Perhaps the tracks in the historic photos are alongside Spring street, not IN Spring street.
Running through the area that is now the "front lawn" of the current Penelec building.
(this seems unlikely to me, since almost everywhere else the streetcar tracks run right down the middle of the street)
b. Perhaps the *front* of the trolley barn no longer exists, and the current penelec building comprises part
of what was once the rear portions of the car barn.
(possible) This seems plausable, since the car barn would have included an electricity generating station,
and penelec could have naturally taken over that part of the operation in the 1930's when the streetcar line shut down.
c. Perhaps the current Penelec building and the historic car barn have nothing in common,
except that they are located on the same site. (also possible.)
d. Perhaps the location of Spring street has shifted somewhat? There has been a lot of street work done in this area..
the DL&W overpass was removed, Route 17 was built, and the "4-lane" road was constructed heading to Waverly,
just north of the current Dandy mini-mart. (but this also seems unlikely, because of the location of Cayuta ave in Waverly,
which naturally matches up with Spring street, and probably always has..also there are houses on Spring street just
south of the Penelec building, which are likely 100 years old or more..
so its unlikely the road has shifted..but im just offering it up as potential throry!
)
Personally I believe "b" is the most likely..that the original "front" of the car barn likely no longer exists, but rear portions of the car barn, maintenance shops and electricty station, could be part of the current existing building.
