Id say other then standing off a curve, behind a train, or in front of a parked one, there is no good way to get a head shot.

The "Get on the tracks and run for your life" method might not work, you are playing with death, because if the "run for your life" part gets screwed up, so do you.

The best way to attempt this shot and not get hit is just not to take the shot.

I do like the bridge or the curve, its safe, in most cases legal, and it has pretty good result. The 45 Degree angle is my favorite.

Here's an "S-Curve" head-on shot I took while railfanning in Las Vegas. Safe - with the telephoto, I was a good 250 feet from the actual path of the tracks.
