Here are some interesting old shots to share - the photographer is unknown (these are not my shots or my dad's but were purchased some time ago). They show only some of the many watchtowers from Hackensack that lasted at least until 1977. These pictures were all taken in August of 1964.

The first two are what I recall to be the tower at Passaic. (If my memory is wrong on any of these, please don't hesitate to call me out on it. I'm happy to fix the captions.)

I like the 1950 Caddy and 1961 Falcon in this view of it.

The next image is of the Anderson Street tower.

Now, this next tower is on Railroad Avenue... I'm pretty sure at James Street, looking North (so the Susquehanna is behind the photographer here... would this tower then also have had some responsbility for the connection between the Susquehanna and the NJNY, rather than being a crossing watchtower? It wouldn't have had anything to do with the Hudson River Line of the Public Service Trolley, would it?).

Finally, here's one that I just can't locate at all. Does anyone know where this tower was?

Thanks to all for looking... and additional thanks in advance to anyone who can provide additional information regarding these locations and towers.

Kind regards,

Thanks for posting these pictures. I spent a lot of time in Hackensack from the 50s to the 70s. I can't identify the last tower.

The last photo is of the tower that stood between Maple Ave and Clinton Place, just west of Anderson St, which is lost in the 'white-out' left-center of the shot.

I knew these towers well. I lived on the corner of Clinton & Grand. I walked Holy Trinity everyday. Then 35 years later,I'm running #1645 every Friday thru there for over a year.

Wow! I remember seeing the tower in the first photos! Every body was complaining about all the crossings on main ave. I can still hear the chugga chugaa of the Rs upon the exit of the draw and how fast it went by, I still have no idea of how old the gates were; They performed flawlessly every time! On an off topic does anyone remember the red oxide building at the other end of town? It had some kind of small cupola as a coal or grain lift??
