I would like to know what is the situation in Mexico regarding passenger rail? Is it true that their network has virtually disappeared? If yes, why and how did that happen? If not, I would like to know more about the existing passenger rail network in Mexico.

The government privatised it on the advice from north of the Rio Grande. The lines were bought by the large Gringo companies who insisted that there be no Mextrak, and so passenger travel died.

I gather the government does have plans for a TGV line but I don't know whether anything happened.

There has been a recent start-up of commuter rail service on one line from Mexico City. I believe the service extends currently about 23 m. out.

I always wondered why Mexico city didint have commuter service , even when i was there 20 years ago . it seems there would be alot of demand for it .

There is an extensive Metro system.

I believe the Copper Canyon tourist train from Chihuahua to Los Mochis still runs.
