Here is picture I found.

I know that diesels smoke, but why is this loco emitting so much white smoke?

Looks like the diesel engine is due for routine reconditioning or rehoning of the cylinders (motor rebuild). The rings and valves are no longer a tight seal. Neat picture considering they rarely smoke this much, especially when a camera is handy.

GE's do smoke and flame, but why is the smoke white, and why is it opaque?
Does anybody have an anecdote of the case?

That loco in the picture has a serious issue of oil in the exhaust. My best guess would be a turbo bearing failure.

Let's see, I believe the turbo has went buh-bye. I'll bet this though, that town probably hasn't seen a mosquito in a couple of years since that picture was taken.
