I have read about recent incidents in Massachusetts (MBTA) and California (LA?) with wrecks involving commuter trains while operating with the locomotive at the rear. One suggestion was to "outlaw" push pull operation.

Anyone want to comment on the feasibility of putting a large energy absorbing bumper at the non-locomotive end of a push pull commuter train? In the event of a collision this should offer some protection to the engineer and to passengers in the front car.

Most people call those shock-absorbing bumpers "locomotives" ;)

Push-pull trains are a great idea, but any shock absorber large enough to slow a train by a considerable amount would weigh nearly as much as a passenger car. Maybe some thought should be given to crumple zones in the front of cab cars, and to a remote-control driver with closed-circuit cameras?

People are portable. no one is pushing people to sit in cab car.
As for strenght a cab car has same 800 000 crush load body strenght as a locomotive.
