Why are the windows in the 4000- cars so scratched up. I've noticed for the past few months that all the 4000 series cars have windows that are nearly opaque (excluding the windshield) with multiple scratches across the surfaces. Neither the rehabbed 2000s and 3000s, or the few unrehabbed 3000s have this problem. Did Breda try to cut costs and put plastic windows in the 4000s? Maybe that's why CAF got the 5000 series contract.

The Rhor cars suffered the same problem after they saw some years of service. The window glazing in the Breda cars when originally delivered used the same Lexan window glazing that was used on the Rhor cars when they were originally delivered. The CAF/AAI and the Alstom cars have a newer and more durable glazing in them. One can reasonably assume the rehabilitated Breda cars also have the newer and more durable glazing in them.

Now that the rehab of the 2000 and 3000 series Breda cars almost fully completed (only a few 3000s left), the only cars that aren't brand new or that haven't undergone rehabilitation are the 1000 series Rohrs and the 4000 series Bredas. I know that the Rohrs can't be rehabbed because of cracks in the body and are likely to be retired when the 7000 series arrive, but that still leaves the 4000 series. Is the WMATA planning on rehabing them before they order the 7000s?

When a rehab occurs, only a few cars are off the property at any given time, so it doesn't really matter when the 4000s are rehabbed in relation to when the 7000s arrive. That said, the 4000 Series Rehab should begin in the early part of the next decade.
