I just found some very sad news about this beloved railroader from Southern California.
Chard worked for the Santa Fe Railway as the Cajon Summit operator from 1947 to 1967.
He is going to need all of our prayers to get through this.
We need more true gentlemen like him around our world.
What a truly CLASS ACT he is !

From John A Thompson on the Cajon Group today:

Here's the latest news from Charlie Schultz.

Chard's daughters, Judy and Joy, arrived in Hesperia late last night.
Today they took Chard home from the hospital and were busy with a
variety of matters. For right now Chard is in a wheel chair, but it is
hoped that he will quickly start using a walker and will soon be back to
walking without assistance. He has been in good spirits today and is
extremely glad to be back home after spending 12 days in bed at the
hospital. Home Hospice care for Chard will start within the next day or
two.

Chard can receive phone calls, cards and letters at home, but no
visitors please at this time. If you are inclined to call or write him,
please do so, as his spirits are always lifted when he hears from
friends and well-wishers.

Last, Chard and his daughters have asked that I convey their sincere
appreciation for the visits, phone calls, cards and prayers he has
received while in the hospital.

REDLANDS, Calif. - A funeral will be held for Chard Walker on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 2 West Olive Ave., Redlands, CA. Walker, 85, died Sept. 28 after a brief illness. Walker was best known as an operator at the Santa Fe train order station at Summit, Calif., in Cajon Pass and became Summit's unofficial photographer and chronicler during his 16-year tour of duty. He documented every train movement he could, not only of his employer Santa Fe but the Union Pacific, which used Cajon Pass via trackage rights (see Trains News Wire, Sept. 28, 2007).

Following the memorial service, guests will be invited to meet Walker's family in Kimberly Hall adjacent to the Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a fund for the preservation of Walker's favorite Los Angeles Railway streetcar, the "Descanso." Checks can be made payable to PRS - Descanso Trust Fund and mailed to: Pacific Railroad Society, 210 West Bonita Avenue, San Dimas, CA 91773. Please indicate "In memory of Chard Walker" on the check.
