Some map study on early 20th century topos shows a pair of grades above US 40 SW of LaVale, MD. Just south of Six Mile House, the old toll house on the National Road (US 40), the twin grades are much higher on the hill above US 68.
The old topos show two tunnels on each line, cutting off small ridges along the side of the hill.
Exploration has shown where the tunnels were, with one partially covered with spoil from highway building, and the other likely daylighted.
Questions:
-Anyone know any more about this spot, the nature of the tunnels, and what became of them?
-I saw the lower line (C&P); does anything of the higher, more southerly line (Georges Creek; abandoned first) exist? Any sign of the old tunnels?
A local we talked to remembered the one of the tunnels (which and which line isn't clear); anyone know any more of the history, and when the lines were abandoned?
Thnx,
Malley
