Hi all -

Does anyone know of pix of the prototype for the older Mantua model of Weyerhaeuser Lumber #118 2-6-6-2T w/ 2 tanks on each side?

TIA.

Is it the same as that mallet that Black Hills Central has?

That has a "split" saddletank - my model has "split" side (or pannier) tanks.
I think Mantua has modeled 3-4 versions of this over the years.

Is this the locomotive you are looking for? Her sister (#108) is in Snoqualmie, WA if you would like to see it in person.

A great source of information for logging mallets is http://loggingmallets.railfan.net/ and the Mantua models are covered at http://loggingmallets.railfan.net/model ... mantua.htm. It looks like the model you're asking about is this one: http://loggingmallets.railfan.net/model ... yer118.jpg

It looks like the only real mallets with that style of tanks were Booth-Kelly Lumber #2 and #6 and St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber #7 and #10. Weyerhaeuser doesn't appear to have had any mallets with that tank style and there's no #118 listed. I suppose it is remotely possible that one slipped through the cracks, or that the St. Paul & Tacoma engines were acquired by Weyerhaeuser, but there's no evidence. If it did exist, it wouldn't have been painted in the bright green of the Mantua model. It would be either dark olive green, or more likely black.

Hi guys -

Mine is of a diff release, mebbe - has a single airpump rightside rather than the 2 shown.

Actually, it seems to be an amalgamation of features of B-K #2 & St.P & T #10.
So I'd call it a "good representation" of a logging mallet.
Much prefer the dark green, tho'. :-)
