Hear, hear! Conrail managed to achieve something that many people had thought impossible at the time of its inception: it made railroading profitable. Sure, it had to happen at the expense of the old-time railroads in the NE, but at least it managed to keep trains moving, which is a lot better than having none at all.

I didn't get into railfanning until a few years after the CSX/NS takeover, but how many people out there ever thought they'd miss Conrail Blue?

Ain't that the truth......from being the (censored) stepchild railroad that no one wanted to being missed almost as much as the fallen flags it replaced....Happy Birthday Conrail.

Must admit to having been a tad bitter when ConRail began 01 April 1976. Followed it nonetheless, especially operations on what was left of the Lehigh Valley RR. in upstate New York. Now it is but a memory of times past, just like the LV. One can only say:"Thanks for the memories".
