I've heard general descriptions about the two diesel engines owned by the RVRR, but the exact model type has been elusive.

Anybody out there know exactly what kind of engines these were, and if a close to prototype model is available in O scale?

They were GE 70 Tonners--actually, I should say "ARE," since they still exist. They are stored in Morristown by the Morristown & Erie RR.

You can find some photos for reference at http://www.trainsarefun.com/rvrr/rvphotos.htm.

A quick "google" found these:
http://www.richyodermodels.com/loco_ge70tonner.htm
http://espee.railfan.net/spge70t.html
http://www.jf2.com/aasrr/011028.html
http://index.mrmag.com/tm.exe?opt=S&sor ... +TREVOR%22

I'm sure a more intense "google" could find more of what you're looking for. Good luck.

Bachmann makes an undecorated GE 70 tonner in HO. I don't know who offers this in O scale.

I've often thought the Rahway Valley, in its heyday, would be a fun shortline to model. You have lots of switching, two interchange points and a combination of industrial, suburban and country-like scenes. It would be a great, point-to-point. Atlas offers a Rahway Valley track plan but I don't think it really resembles the Rahway Valley.

Make that three interchanges: DL&W in Summit, CNJ in Cranford, and LV in Roselle Park.

Best switches,

And, it had a branch line.

If you want to see what the RVRR's GE 70 tonners looked like straight from the factory in Erie, PA, my book has two photos taken by GE for their archives.

Something worth looking at is an old model RR magazine that offers a layout of the Springfield station/freight house area. I'll post the issue date tomorrow, the magazine is not on hand at the moment. I found it on Ebay.

Two branch lines: the Monsanto branch in Kenilworth, and the Maplewood branch.
