I can't say if it is rumor or fact but I've heard it too.

I don't know what advantage NS would get from doing that. First off I would think the NIMBY factor would be excessive. Most of that section of railroad has been out of service for so many years that if those NIMBY's even saw a shadow of a train they'd probably scream bloody hell. Secondly, since most of that railroad has been out of service for so long it would take a lot of work to rehabilitate it back to the standards that could support regular freight, or even passenger, operations.

While it would be great to see trains back on the original Erie mainline I believe it's just wishful thinking.
