I have MI's that give test procedure for EI and 3-relay transitions as found on Geeps. In general, the procedure consists of charging the control air on the loco, then with the prime mover shut down, placing throttle, reverser, and all other controls as if running. By applying and removing clip leads from the various relays, the engine should make its way through transition, or else let you see at what point things are failing to work.

Anybody know of a similar instruction for an SW9? Thanks!

Try MI-6833 dated 1-58 "Testing and/or setting automatic transition on switcher locomotives with model D15 generators".

Possibly available from EMD's industrial and shortline rail products distributor, Rail Systems Inc., in Houma, Louisiana.

I had missed that one while thumbing through the MI books, but I did have it! With the MI number you gave, it was easy to find. Just what I was looking for. Thanks a million - problem solved!
