BN's venerable E units were retired in 1992. Metra replaced them with EMD's F40PHM-2's, road numbers 185-214, although about half of these units are assigned elsewhere on Metra's system. After retirement from Metra, some of them were sold off to MARC's commuter system, based in our nation's capital, but I'd be suprised if they'd still be in service now.

Speaking of E units, does anyone know the heritage of BN E1? Last time I saw it was last year at the Illinois Railway Museum, and it was in the dark green and cream colors (similar to the SD70MACS as delivered to BN). Did this unit ever operate for Metra?

BN E9s are long gone from the Metra system.

Indeed some where sold to MARC, but have all been retired. Two or three of them were used for parts for the IC/CN E units, and had been sitting around Northeastern IL for some time. They were all discarded in the past year or so and two have made their way back to the Illinois Railway Museum.

doepack, you were thinking of BN-3, the E9 at IRM.

I don't know it's heritage but there's a good chance it was an ex-commuter E9.

BN-3 is the former “commuter E9” BN 9919. It was built as CB&Q 9989A, and was numbered BN 9989 for a few years after the 1970 BN merger.

BN-1 didn’t operate for Metra and isn’t an E. It’s an F9. It’s ex-BN 972567, ex-BN 766, ex-BN 9800, nee-NP 6700A.

Speaking of BN-1 what happened to it? Someone had a couple of E-9's for sale but they wanted too much for them.

I believe from what I've heard from IRM workers, one of the MARC ex-BN E9As will be painted in CB&Q zephyr silver for back-up power on the Nebraska Zephyr. I know there is another MARC E9A on display at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis that I saw.

4 of them went to the IC for their buisness fleet ( preety sure all 4 of Them were ex BN). 2 of them got rebuilt and painted in IC Grey and black while the other 2 sat for spme time untill CN took over. The 2 that sat are now in CN colors.

For a while when BN was using BN1-4 as OCS power, they were painted similar to the SD70MAC's. Then BN gave them away and used the 'MACs for OCS power - was this a maintenance issue? I was never clear why the heritage units were discarded.
