TOPSHAM — State workers have begun clearing brush and repairing the rail bed on the line that runs between Lisbon and Lewiston.
A Maine Department of Transportation official said Friday that people who live near the tracks can expect to hear the whistles of trains passing through the area by late fall. The return of rail service along the southern stretch of the Lewiston-Brunswick line would depend on how long it takes to complete the repair work, the outcome of public hearings on the railroad crossings and negotiations between rail operators and two local businesses that hope to use the line for freight transport, according to Robert Elder, director of the Office of Freight Transportation for the Maine Department of Transportation.
