Train stopped at Hamilton Rd for a major oil leak.

Train left Hamilton a few minutes ago. Crew could not find the source of the leak. Crew was highly doubtful that the train would make it back from Lakewood...

Train should be at Collingswood Auction within 30 minutes or so.

Of the 4 Monmouth County HazMat Task Force teams, Neptune (Station 34-9) would be closest to Hamilton Rd. to assist with a major oil leak and containment, with Middletown FD Special Services Unit (Station 71-4) as back-up. Because no agency was called in, I will assume that the oil leak was not as bad as initially reported here and hopefully they can isolate the troubled unit (i.e, dead-in-tow) on the return trip.

Train went through Lakewood with a Federal Railroad Police escort.

Guess Conrail has had enough of the locals using the tracks as a walking path.

@RailsEast I’m thinking either a seal (Rear Main Seal?) went or the block is cracked. Got pictures of the crew looking at it which I will upload tomorrow.

The oil is leaking badly enough that if the engine keeps going at this rate then all the engine oil will leak out, resulting in engine failure.

Never heard of the Federal Railroad Police, but I bet it was impressive...

Also, an EMD 645 prime mover oil system incorporates in the neighborhood of 200 gallons of lube oil. It would be a shame to see 200 gallons of oil spewed along the right of way. That would be a real mess.

As far as I know there is no law enforcement entity know as "Federal Railroad Police".
Out of curiosity, I went over to Hamilton Rd at 9:30 PM with my trusty SUPER BRIGHT flashlight, there is no sign whatsoever of any oil leak in the area.

This vehicle I saw was an all black Chevy pickup with blue/red lights and a circular logo with the words “RAILROAD POLICE” and “FEDERAL RAILROAD ADMINISTRATION” on the top and bottom of logo respectively. It went to each crossing in downtown Lakewood arriving about 10 seconds before the train crossed the road. The driver was using a loudspeaker to warn pedestrians to stay off the tracks. Train went through town way slower than usual too. Not sure if the video I got at Second Street properly caught it.

The reason why there’s oil on the ground is because most of it had leaked onto the rear truck, and from there it dripped onto the ground slowly. I’d say at the rate it was coming out, would’ve taken a few hours at least for all 200 gallons to leak out. Bad enough that if it’s not fixed quickly then that engine ain’t gonna run much longer.

Would’ve made a great shot to see all 200 gallons spray out at one time. That’d get me lots of YouTube views! Maybe get some of that ad revenue too!

Words are important. The Federal Railroad Administration, part of the Department of Transportation does have a Railroad Safety Division: "The Office of Railroad Safety's divisions serve as technical experts on matters of railroad safety and aid in the development of regulations and the evaluation of waivers submittals ". As far as I can tell, it does not have a law enforcement function or police function. There are several "Railroad Police" agencies that operate in New Jersey including, but not limited to, police agencies at NJ Transit, CSX and NS.
I would be very curious to know EXACTLY what you saw.

I find it very hard to believe that you were able to find this so-called “oil leak”, and the crew wasn’t.

@NY&LB Unfortunately I don’t believe I have a good picture of this vehicle. My dash cam caught it but from a distance. This safety division you mentioned, would they do what this guy did? Going to each crossing with his lights on and using his loudspeaker to tell kids to stay back? A Google search of similar vehicles shows only NS had this circular logo I saw, but their cars are black and white.

Federal Railroad Police, to my knowledge, are who shows up at your house one day (or the day after) you go railfanning and do something interpreted as dangerous near the tracks. They usually take your name and information, tell you what you did wrong, and if your really unlucky they will charge you. A few people I know have had this experience.

@trainster78 I didn’t find the leak. I was only speculating. Not sure how I could find a leak that a qualified train crew couldn’t lol.

I’ll have the picture of them checking it out at Hamilton uploaded sometime today. Car goes to the shop today so maybe I’ll get it uploaded while waiting for that. Google photos gives me nothing but grief lol.

Well, when you are "speculating", please mark it as such.

NO, their function was stated in my post: Railroad Safety Division: "The Office of Railroad Safety's divisions serve as technical experts on matters of railroad safety and aid in the development of regulations and the evaluation of waivers submittals ".

As I and others have said, there is no such entity as "Federal Railroad Police" The people you know are not credible.
