The discontinuance was approved. RED Technologies has the ability to switch over most of the track, w/ the exception of spur to the old Mis State Recovery facility.

Noticed activity in Middletown yard last week. They seemed to be replacing ties & adding ballast.
Has there been a problem with de-railments there ?

Yes and Yes. Well I know they had an engine on the ground a couple weeks ago. Not sure if the surfacing work is directly related to that or not. But they are doing a bunch of work in the yard.

Here are some photos from a derailment last year.

I had a Middletown branch question. Next to PermaTreat in Durham was a long spur into a business in the industrial park. It crossed Airline road twice. The initial section is still in use to switch tie cars for Permatreat. My question is Who used this spur? and when was it used? UCONN historic aerial maps https://connecticut.maps.arcgis.com/app ... 54,42.4665
indicate it was built between 1970 and 1986. I never remember ever seeing it in use other than Permatreat north of airline road. I assume a long spur like this wasn't cheap to build. There was a time, I was told, where some Industrial park developers built sidings to attract tenants such as Prestige Park in East Hartford

I think this is the spur your referring to

I don’t know anything about it or where it ended but great question.

Yes that is it; i think the crossings may have been paved over but easy to see on those old Uconn Aerial maps.

On the topic of the Middletown branch another siding unused today but still in existence is the one at Middletown Plate Glass near the Union Street Crossing. Not sure what it was originally used for but after the Valley Line from Maromas to Old Saybrook closed in March 1968, I believe Moodus Lumber used it to unload lumber then truck it down to Moodus (They had previously unloaded at Goodspeeds).

It crossed Airline road twice. The spur formed a U shape. I don't believe it crossed Rt 68

I see it now... interesting wonder if it ever was actually in use?

Noticed some work in Portland at Route 66 ... trap rock, looks like they're replacing RxR tracks with a road ?
