The PTC test trains are 4-car flat sets with MBBs that were made good enough to run as trailing cars but not carry passengers. That's probably what you saw.

Just checked out of curiosity. It was the 065 train to Plymouth on Friday. Cab car was 1507, loco was 2016.

Providence train 825 (control car 1704) had 9 doubles on it Friday. Set is usually used for 808 in the morning. Preparation for the marathon ridership?

The 1645 is actually a lead car on the South Side. Also, the 1636 is somewhere down south too.

The set with 1645 as an active control car, and 1636 directly behind it, was on Track 10 at South Station this morning. Now that the 1600s have ACSES as part of the PTC program, segregating them north is no longer an issue.

I think that set has only been running on the Old Colony lines so far, and none of the lines that touch the NEC. Would they be usable on the NEC right now?

The set used for 842 and 821 today had 8 doubles without a control car, had a locomotive on each end (HSP46-2010 on the west side, a GP on the east side).

There some control car shortage lately?

Just saw a four car set with a locomotive on both ends just past Boston Landing on the Framingham/Worcester line. 1071 leading, 1120 trailing.

Think there's some kind of shortage down south. One of the 8 double sets is at 7 doubles and a single, at least two of the 6 double sets are 5 doubles and a single, a couple of 3 double/3 single sets (which aren't normally considered normal sets), and feels like several of the 4 double/2 single sets are 4 doubles/1 single.

Well, at least that explains where the sudden 7 car sets on the Northside came from...

a proposed work train is being discussed for the Southside....the Fairmount line tie job this summer, dedicated stone train will be needed. Keolis is in works to get the recently refurbished caboose at Area 52 for said work train

Yeah, saw the 1722 this afternoon when I went up to Boston.

So where did 1703 and 1717 disappear to? Haven't seen either of them on any tracking apps in a long time. Are they the control cars being used to test rebuilt F40s/Kawasakis?
