In the history of the MTA, LIRR received the M1, M3, & M7 models while Metro North received the M1A, M3A & M7A models, which were the same cars with slight differences as requested/needed by each railroad.

With the M9, someone either didn't care to maintain that or didn't know. Had MNR decided to purchase M9 cars, they also would have been M9, not M9A (Which they should have been)

To further corrupt this scheme, the M9A will be a different car altogether than the M9, perhaps not even compatible, it should really be the M11

Why wasn't there an M5 and M5A?

the M5a was designed as a single car to replace the MN ACMU's it was to have been compatible with the M-3a's .
LIRR nixed the idea, realizing their M3's would not last as long as newer M5's so both railroads went for the M7's

M-9's ON THE RUN !

At 2:50PM today I spotted a six car M-9 test train breezing through Farmingdale.

So that's twelve cars on the property ?

Just spotted the same train just a few minutes ago westbound on the grade between Deer Park and Wyandanch.

This is down a grapevine but i feel like it should be reported nonetheless. The M9s apparently suffered a minor accident in Hillside, and haven't been accepted into LIRR ownership. This comes from a post in the Long Island Failroad facebook group

Has anyone heard anything new in the last few weeks regarding the M9's?

Here is what is new, at 12:24 PM this afternoon the test train was seen between Kew Gardens and Jamaica no M7 sandwiched, they were waiting to head eastbound.

They are now in the process of testing the other pairs as leaders.
