If in Aurora, IL, why couldn’t Amtrak run on the GMO (CN) to Joliet, and switch to BNSF? The Zephyr could go back on the BN side in Cameron (west of Galesburg.

Just because you can put together a number of lines on a map to create an alternate route - doesn't mean that you can come up with QUALIFIED crews to operate over the alternate route or or segments of it - IF the owner(s) of the alternate route have track space and time for the reroute.

Gee I used to work this territory. I’m sure that Amtrak no longer has crews qualified between Joliet, and Cameron, but most BNSF crews are qualified on the GMO, and Chillicothe Sub. I was.
