NYNJ Rail Sightings

Drove through the NYNJR Port Jersey side on Sunday.

Lots of new cameras and security guards running around, so I stayed in my car.

Business looks better since my last trip, Not as many covered hoppers, but lots of busy/new boxcar business.

Nice, so they still have #1133. I was wondering what happened to it, even got a new logo on the cab, some sort of lighting on the roof and the red stripe across the hood is gone.

Someone mentioned that they got some warehouse business that used to be conducted at Port Newark. The business moved when the PA razed some warehouses to make room for container storage for the port.

Yup! A company called P Judge and Sons, I think...

I vaguely remember an article on it in a Conrail newsletter -- lemme try to dig it up...

My mistake. of course it is RS-70 NOT FS-70.

Is the increase all divided between NJ and the Bay Ridge Interchange? Or is there more traffic along 1st Avenue?

A majority of the cars you see in jtunnels photos are interchange for NYAR

I think SIMS is all that's left on 1st.

However, I think depending on how the SBMT RFP goes, we may see more.

I am wondering how much of the increased traffic is truly new, versus NYAR shifting traffic away from CSX to NS because of service issues?

No traffic has been shifted from CSX. Traffic from both CSX and NYNJ has increased. The only effect "HH" has really had on CSX service is late inbounds.

It's a shame that after they refurbished the tracks along 1st Avenue and in 39th Street Yard, their customer base along !st has plummeted. Between that, and shifting the float operation to Bay Ridge, track usage is now a token.

It's still a good thing that the work was done - since there is a customer to serve, and a better basis for trying win over/back others. Foes anyone konow what businesses are currently along the route who might reasonable engage in shipping by rail?
