‘Torrington Extra Photo Special’
(Boston) – Thomaston, CT -- Waterbury (Highland Jct.) – Torrington & Return
Saturday, April 29, 2017 - One Day Only!
Our first trip all the way to Torrington since 2003!!
Join Mass. Bay RRE for a return trip – our first since 2003 -- over the entire ex- New York, New Haven & HartfordNaugatuck Railroad from Waterbury to Torrington, CT. Opened in 1849, then leased to the New Haven in 1889, the "Naugy" is now owned by the Connecticut Department of Transportation and operated by volunteers of the Railroad Museum of New England. Our "Tour of the Line" charter train will cover all of the Naugy's operable track, including the "freight-only" section north of the Army Corps' Thomaston Dam to Torrington.
Our special train will leave the preserved Thomaston depot promptly at 10 AM. We'll first head south to Highland Junction, the Naugatuck's connection to Pan Am Southern (from Hartford) in Waterbury. Then we'll return to Thomaston for a lunch break. Passengers may order a box lunch or bring their own picnic lunch to eat off the train during our stop. We'll then continue north, traveling across the face of the Thomaston dam and over the newly-restored track to the end of the line in Torrington. Several runbys and photo opportunities are planned, including locations that are accessible only by rail.
Ex-New Haven EMD FL-9 2019, completely restored to its classic original McGinnis-era New Haven livery, will lead our train of three ex-Canadian National coaches and former Rutland combine 260. Extra-fare coach seating in the Rutland 260 includes exclusive access to the combine section, where the baggage doors will be open for photographers. Note: The Rutland 260 is sold out as of March 1.

The line between Thomaston and East Litchfield was relocated back around 1959 when they built the flood control dam just north of Thomaston. Regular passenger service between Waterbury - Torrington and Winsted ended in December, 1958 before the job was finished and the only passenger trains to use the "new" line were the tourist trains, fan trips and camp specials of by-gone days. It is well worth riding.
