Florida Keys will ask state for help studying rail system

KEY WEST, FLA.
County commissioners in the Florida Keys will be asking state transportation officials to help study whether a light rail or monorail system would be feasible for the island chain.

The Monroe County Commission agreed Tuesday to work with the Florida Department of Transportation on the study.

The Key West Citizen reports (http://bit.ly/1Quesfu" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) that some commissioners and residents opposed the idea, saying a rail system would add visual clutter to scenic U.S. Highway 1.

Let's just jump in the time machine and go back to the thirties and put Mr Flagler's FEC back in where US 1 is now. No US1, no conflict.

While it might be fun and interesting to think about this, such is absolutely not possible without a huge, huge expense. None of the bridges that remain are in any kind of shape to support anything much less the support of a light rail vehicle. The folks in Florida simply for the most part prefer their automobiles. Not practical at all.
