Train 1376 was an extra West Trenton run that came from a turn of a Temple University-bound train. It was supposed to originate at Suburban Station at 12:45am, but this did not go according to plan.

As of 12:20, the train had dropped off the status boards. It kept appearing and disappearing, showing delays of 3-10 minutes each time. Nobody knew where the train was. Not the engineer who was taking the train, road foremen who were on the platform, or the passenger services office upstairs. Just after 12:50, the train rolled through Suburban on track 2 and didn't stop. Supervision explained to the passengers on the platform that it had to turn around. Great, but why did it have to pass Suburban to turn? They explained it was going to 30th to pickup passengers and then come back.

At 1:10, supervision and the relief engineer attempted to contact the crew, with no response. Dispatch also attempted to contact the crew with no response. Supervision at 30th indicated the conductor refused to move the train. At some point, he marked off sick and walked off the train.

Just about around 1:30, the train finally rolled into Suburban and we got on our way. The kicker? No conductor. One of the road foremen (JN) had to run the train up with the relief engineer.

Train 1577 was an extra along the main line, and that was jam packed. At least 5 of the 6 cars were filled to the brim at Suburban. Transit Police supervision instructed the conductor to NOT stop at 30th Street, and put two officers on the train to enforce that. The road foremen were screaming at the top of their lungs, across the tracks, telling the conductor that he must pickup passengers at 30th Street. In this case, who has the authority? I know the conductor has final say about the train, but can police or supervision overrule him?

Quite an exciting night.

you can say that again. i just came our of the booth at 40th st. three times it was flip-flopped whether the trolleys were running on diversion, as is usually on sunday nights, and never once did i hear about it from dispatch. once from septa police and twice from angry passengers.

Are you sure the conductor marked off or could he not make the trip due to hours of service issues ? SEPTA uses managers as engineers and conductors on a regular basis because they are under staffed. Especially short engineers.

I only know what the road foreman said. He said the conductor didn't want to do another run, so he marked off early because he was "sick".
