Trust me when I tell you that I feel all of your frustrations. But this has been the known reality for many years... Just look at what the GRS did to the D&H... With NS finally coming in to save the day on the D&H Southend, things are going to start changing in the NEUS rail scene.
There was just an NS/CP rules class in Binghamton and there was lots of talks of NS starting the process of making Binghamton a "Gateway Terminal" for the NEUS and Eastern Canada. This of course will entail the takeover of PAS (within 3-5 years if not much less), its inevitable at this point. With the missing link of the D&H Southend just 8 weeks away from being under NS control and ownership, the NS NEUS "plan" is starting to roll out. Give it 3-5 years and they will be going toe to toe with CSXT for any and all business into New England. Time to chip away at the monopoly CSXT (and previously Conrail) has enjoyed for decades in New England and get some real competition up there. The D&H Southend and PAS is the major artery in doing so. I would also not be surprised to see some partnerships with Canadian National and likely some of the New England shortlines as well (NECR, P&W, VRS, etc.). We have already seen some of this with the P&W Auto and Ethanol Traffic and soon to be Salt Contract as well. I would fully expect these types of agreements/partnerships to prosper and expand in the coming years, its one of NS's key business aspects.
The grumblings I have heard also call for some expansion of Mechanicville Intermodal and a MAJOR expansion/rebuild of Ayer Intermodal (much needed) as well. They are going to need extensive capacity in order to effectively compete.
Time will tell, but things are getting very interesting and promising! Buckle up and hang on, its going to be a wild ride the next 5 years or so!
