Tuesday night, Sept. 9th, I was in Charlotte NC with my wife, ticketed back to New York on No. 20 the
Crescent. As per the Amtrak status board, after leaving New Orleans on time somewhere between Meridian MS and Tuscaloosa AL No. 20 got stabbed for an hour's delay. By Greenville SC it was starting to recover time. We departed Charlotte about 20 minutes late at 2:06 AM. I knew right away they were trying to make up time because the engineer left town in a hurry!
The next morning, Sept. 10th, we went into Washington ahead of schedule. No. 20 is a "Discharge-only" train from there (actually Alexandria) north and we continued to make up time. We departed Philadelphia more than 10 minutes
early and were 20 minutes ahead by Newark. We arrived NYP about 1:24 PM, a full 22 minutes ahead of schedule. I thought Amtrak did an excellent job, I was very happy with the performance and I enjoyed the ride. I would do it again without hesitation.
At Washington I watched the car knockers cut off our three Gennies (no wonder our 8-car train took off like a rocket from Charlotte!) 153, 202 and 14. (153 and 202 were coupled end-to-end and 202 and 14 were coupled nose to end with 14 facing south.) Below is a cell phone photo I took as they coupled Toaster 934 onto the train on the lower level tracks at Washington Union Station.
