For those interested in loco histories:

2217 is ex-EMDX 776, CR/PC 7976
2232 is ex-EMDX 804, CR/PC 8004

These units were on long term lease to BN/BNSF since 10/92.

What's the difference between the two when it comes to leasing locomotives?
The Commuter Rail equipment/property is owned by the MBTA, but maintained and operated by MBCR. So MBCR has to provide labor and parts to keep the MBTA fleet in operation. In this case, MBCR is using it's own funds to obtain the units and operate them.

The pair was set out for pickup yesterday, but were still at BET this morning since LA-2 did not run to Somerville last night.

Did the two ever leave BET while on lease to MBCR? I don't remember seeing any pictures of them except sitting outside the shop.

I think the 2217 eventually got out on the Work Train last month when the 3247 got
sidelined. Both stuck to BET like glue and used as switchers sparingly...

They were picked up Sunday night by LA-2.
