I've heard that the NJRR originally went down to the south end of the Centre St Branch and then turned west on Market St and south on Broad St (the old Middlesex-Essex Turnpike, which much of the NJRR is built on). Alternately, it would make a lot more sense if it continued straight from the Centre St Branch along Park Place and Broad St. Did either of these happen?
Additionally, does anyone know where the Morris & Essex originally ended in Newark? Did it have a track connection to the NJRR?

Very interesting to see the Morris Canal pictured on this map. As you may or may not know, the canal was coverred over and became the Newark City Subway (and Raymond Boul.) and is still operating.

You're saying the PRR westward from the Hunter curve is on the turnpike alignment? Which closely aligns Broad Street as well-- so the railroad may originally have been straight (no curves) all the way from MP 12 to Market St.
