End of steam on NYC in N Michigan?

Can any of you say when the last freight moved behind steam through Mackinaw City? If not, when were the last domestic steam moves on the NYC were conducted? What line in Canada saw the last NYC steam, and when?

January 3, 1956: The NYC consigned to scrap the last two steam locomotives which were used on their Detroit-Mackinaw City run. [MRF-/1981]

January 9, 1956: The New York Central roundhouse in Jackson informs the Big Four that they will no longer service steam locomotives after 12:01 a.m. Big Four trains into Jackson were powered by Alco 1,500 hp diesel locomotives or other diesel power after this time. [HCN]

Thank you so much. We are trying to run down a photo location & Mackinaw City is a good match except that we see 1958 cars in the picture. Hard to put a steam locomotive gone by 1956 in a 1958/9 photo.

I would suggest you double check the years on the automobiles in the photo(s). During that time some of the models did not change too much in 1956, 1957 and 1958. As for the New York Central there was no more steam after 1957 when the last steam locomotives operated I believe in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Central operated two ten-wheelers, numbers 1290 and 1291, between St. Thomas and Courtright, Ontario until their retirement in 1956 and 1957. It's a safe guess that these were the last two steamers on the NYC in Canada.

I would not consider Wikipedia as a reliable source for info - maybe a general guideline. I've given up on trying to correct all the mistakes on the various Canada Southern and New York Central related pages - including the 1290/1291 page cited. Too many listings are based on assumptions, heresay and non-factual information that have been repeated over and over.

The last steam locomotive to operate on the CASO was 1290 on April 27, 1957 - with an official last photo -

However, there was also a dozen 0-8-0s and 2-8-0s still operating into late April 1957 until delivery of the dozen GP-9 units from GMDD replaced them.
