The paint scheme on the locomotives of the IHB & South Shore look the same to me. Are these two railroads connected in any way?

Nope. IHB was historically controlled by NYC and wore their freight black until 1980. CSS was independent save for 15 years of C&O control.

IHB was controlled by NYC 51% and MILW 49%. NYC share passed to Penn Central and then Conrail. With the split of Conrail between NS and CSX each now owns 25.5%. MILW's share passed to Soo Line. With Soo Line being controlled by CP, that share effectively belongs to CP, so they are the largest shareholder.
