• Looks like Kato has Plans for a N-Scale P32AC-DM...

The first time I watched this video I thought that Kato was going to be applying CDOT paint on its P42/P40 model. When I went back to look however, I realized that it is an entirely new model! Maybe a HO version will follow???

This is the only info at all that I have been able to find on this.

Betcha Kato will screw it up and just mount it to the current drive of the P40/42....which is the way they have it shown in the picture.

looks like correct underbody with reactor coil and battery box at right location.

It looks much more than a repaint. If they are having a modeler custom build each of those, that will be a lot of work adding and removing all of those grills. Or did they make new tooling for this custom model?

Dutch, I didn't know you were a model railroader too. What do you model?

Sorry to bust your bubble, but thats certainly a repainted P42. There is no big round fan on the roof of a P32ACDM. The fan is internal. Also I dont see any 3rd rail shoes on the bottom of the trucks, the 480V box under the rear of the fuel tank. The air tanks on the dual mode are forward, these are towards the rear. No roof hump for the rear traction motor blower and the two lower side inlets for the radiator are positioned wrong.

You pay extra money for some paint and a piece of plastic glued to the nose to look like an escape hatch.

Here's a link to an image which should better represent what the finished locomotive will look like:

(Arrow down a bit to see the CDOT/New Haven unit. It is the first item listed on the page.

Agreed, it will not be a completely accurate model of the P32. Still, it appears sufficient detail is being reworked so the result should be something of a credible stand in. I believe the only alternative at this point is Overland's HO brass model for considerably more money, if you can even find one for sale. I went ahead and pre-ordered the Kato unit.

Here are a few images of Kato P42 models which appear to have been modified and repainted to represent P32s in a manner similar to the Kato/Kobo unit:

Very nice work.

All they did here was add something that looks like the nose door and plate over one of the rear vents. Thats something almost anyone could do really, and if you couldn't theres plenty of others out there who could do it for you for a fair price. The paint is nicely done, doing all of the rest of the mods would require some reworking of the body shell in the rear section.

I see what you are talking about, and from the beginning I realized that it was not a perfect representation. I don't plan on buying one either because I am not in N scale, nor do I model CDOT/MNRR. But still, it is a good stand in with a nice paint job.

There was an "attempted" model of the P-32 in HO by Athearn near the end of "Blue Box" era of locos.
It was basicly a "repaint" of the P-40 body shell in MN silver/blue,there was an article done RMC years back,
modifing the shell to create the proper model. That was a CDOT/NH P-32 in the article, but could be used
to create MNR/AMTK P-32's as well.
