From TimesUnion.com:
TimesUnion.com wrote:The railroad blames the accident on a "failure to apply (sufficient) number of handbrakes" on the individual freight cars. They were carrying soybeans or were empty, a Pan Am spokeswoman said at the time. Forty-four cars were being held in place by just three hand brakes. When another 29 cars were added, the train began rolling, reaching a speed of 18 mph when the derailment occurred.

3 handbrakes for 79 cars? Yeah.... even if they were all empty that wouldn't work.

It will if it's flat. But when you have a big cut of cars on a hill with minimal hand brakes and the cars are bled off and then you pound more on top of that...

Everyone who's worked for the RR has been in the sh*t once or more. Some just worse than others...
