I know that was common in steam days for a heavy passenger train to get a helper on at Albany, NY to take it to the top of West Albany Hill. By the '60's did diesel powered mail and/or passenger trains ever get a helper?

Mid 60's when Train #5 (Mail & Express) was long and heavy we got pushed from Albany to Karner. This only happend occassionally and was usually weekend train around heavy holiday season or when mail order catalogs were shipped by JC Penny or Sears. This train was hot: Supt ED Joslin had orders only one x-over move between Hofffmans & Kirkville account did not want to slow train down to Limited Speed (45 MPH). Always had four 40-hundreds (E Units), slow to accelerate but could keep speed up after you once got a swing on the train. Occassionally remember a GP-35 being added to the consist but at 75MPH didn't seem to help much is my recollection; not withstanding they were 62:15 geared locomotives stenciled for 65MPH.
