  • Discussion related to the Norfolk & Western, up to 1982. Also includes discussion of the Virginian Railway (1959); Wabash; Nickel Plate; Pittsburgh & West Virginia Railway; Akron, Canton & Youngstown Raiload (all 1964); and the Illinois Terminal (1981).

Can anyone provide me with a brief history and disposition of NKP #773?
Obviously this was a Lima-built Berkshire (2-8-4). I have a photo of me, at age 3, standing in front of this locomotive in Westfield, NY in 1956. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

From John A. Rehor's excellent Nickle Plate Story: The #773 was among the last steam locomotives built by Lima in the Spring of 1949. It accumulated 80,689 miles of service in its first ten months and a total of 703,243 miles before it was retired in 1958.

The #773 was laid up at Conneaut, OH in April 1958 and sold to Canton Iron & Steel in April 1963 for scrapping.

I believe the NKP held on to the steamers for a while "just in case". Never happened.
